Lake Superior Shore...the big lake they call gitche gummee

We swam in this lake. It was early September and the water was like liquid ice. Like a fool I ran in, yelling and laughing, tripped on the rocks, fell face down in 3 feet of water and would of wailed like a dramatic baby except that all the breath was knocked out of me by my body compressing itself inward from the shock of the cold water. The water was fresh and clear, unlike Lake Michigan riddled with algae slime and mussels. We got used to the water, well, kind of, and even tricked a tourist into coming in for a swim.

Top: The helicopter rides are a classic ride at the Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay. They must of rebuilt and painted them shiny new colors. My mom and grand baby Elizabeth are on the orange helicopter. 2nd Down: Baby Lincoln, the other grand baby, gladly holds his ride ticket. My mom is in the background. He kept chewing on it. That's how I know he liked to hold it. 3rd Down: Elizabeth, 2 1/2 rides the ponies for the first time. She was thrilled, to say the least. 4th Down: This is me. So that makes that photo 43 years old. The family who owned and operated the pony ride lived down the road from us. My mom would save carrots and other vegetables so that we could give them treats. This was so cool!

Here's a shot of my son, Matthew, the day I went to help him with chores. Using the word help is a stretch because I fed the calves and played with the dog and watched him work. The old barn here is defunct and holds cows that are too young to milk.

The New Frankin Run/Walk Fundraiser

An annual fundraiser the New Frankin Volunteer Fire Department Run/Walk takes place every year. It gets bigger and bigger. It's 20 dollars to run/walk the 1, 3, or 5 miles and participants receive a T-shirt, hot dogs, potato chips, fruit, and donuts. It's the tradition of the volunteer firemen to walk with all their gear no matter what the weather. It's quite the local tradition and the walk, all country back roads, is simply stunning.

It was Halloween and all the kids are out trick or treating. The neighborhood was filled with costumed kids and parents, but this creepy clown guy...what the hell? He/she? was so, so, sooo, yuk. Get away. I like to think he was just a dad supervising his kids but he seemed to be coming up every driveway we did. One teenager girl came barreling down the street screaming when she spotted this clown. Some people have a clown phobia, Coulrophobia. This one wasn't funny.

It's cold and rainy, and what a better day than to mix up a batch, using the Betty Crocker recipe, of banana bread. As you can see, they turned out exceptional. It's ok to be envious of my baking ability. The plums are in season as well, and my friend happens to have the most outrageous plum trees. They are Italian prune plums. This past week we sat at the church rummage sale and sold lunch bags full of plums to the neighbors. It was fun. Go her blog to read more about it and collect some fantastic recipes.

This bruschetta was fantastic. My friend, who is a chef, made this at her last party. She grows an array of different kinds of tomatoes. Well, it was more than amazing and we were suppose to save some of the bread for the late comers. We did make a pathetic attempt, we left them 3 little pieces. Next time, be on time.

My Grandpa used to say that weeds are just flowers misplaced. They are something to enjoy and wonder about.

I'm not sure which variety of thistle this is but here are my options:

Platte thistle, Canadian thistle, Wavyleaf thistle, Musk thistle, Bull thistle, Field thistle, Scotch thistle, Tall thistle, Yellow Star thistle, Italian thistle, and the Plumeless thistle

The fuzz of thistles has been collected to stuff pillows and the oil of the seeds were used to burn and cook with. The thistle has been used to treat some cancers and ulcers.
A single musk thistle plant can produce up to 20,000 seeds. Those seeds can stay in the soil up to seven years and grow again.

My mom was on a trip and before it got too cold or snowy my kids, on the left, and my sister and I decided to tie up these Christmas wooden cut-outs. My Mom always thinks this kind of thing is neat. I think she likes the idea of all of us taking the time out to surprise her. My sister is in the second shot, but Ally poked her head in just in the nic of time.

So I walk into my sister's kitchen and these three are there with these old outdated sunglasses on. My sister, Kim, on the left, saved every pair of sunglasses that ever came her way or anyone elses way, for the past 30 years. I love the pair she has on and the one on my daughter, Ally, completely covers her face. My son, Matthew picked ones from the 70's.

I don't know...I'm so different than her. I lose every pair of sunglasses that cross my path. Oh, I also sit on a lot of them. Most sunglasses of mine have a life expectancy of about 2-3 days. Once I lost a pair within an hour.

My sister would say, "I'm not surprised."
